Critique Meetings

The main focus of our regular meetings is to help members improve and polish their writing. Members read a portion of their writing aloud to the group, and everyone provides supportive and constructive critiques on the piece.

People wishing to read bring copies of a piece to the meeting. There's a word limit of up-to 2,500 words to give everyone a chance to read. Longer works can be broken up into shorter sections, and brought over subsequent meetings.

Reading aloud at a meeting

While a piece is being read, the rest of the group listens and annotates their copy with comments, giving the reader written feedback to take away with them. After each reading a discussion takes place around the table, giving everyone a chance to offer their opinions, and giving the reader a chance to clarify points or ask for more details.

Although receiving criticism can be daunting – especially at first – the group focuses on providing honest but sensitive feedback. If you're feeling nervous that’s fine, just mention it before you read, and we'll be fully supportive.

Time

We meet for critique meetings on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Mondays of the month, from 19:30 to 21:30.
